The entity is the world leader biopharmaceutical company engaged in advancing the treatment of cancer through the discovery and development of marine-derived medicines. It has five novel compounds, including Yondelis, Aplidin, Kahalalide F, Zalypsis and PM02734 in clinical trials, a network of preclinical candidates, as well as R&D programs. The company's marine samples provide the basis for its product portfolio. These include: six agents in clinical development: Yondelis (trabectedin) is under registration for the treatment of soft tissue sarcomas. In addition Yondelis is being studied in a pivotal (valid for registration) Phase III trial in ovarian cancer. Other Phase II trials with Yondelis include breast, prostate, and paediatric sarcomas. Aplidin (plitidepsin) and Kahalalide F are in Phase II clinical trials and Zalypsis and PM02734 are in Phase I clinical trials. The company was founded in the year 1986 with the vision of exploiting the great potential of the oceans as a source of medicines for improved cancer treatment. It has a collection of 42,000 marine organisms obtained from expeditions around the world. Approximately 7,000 chemical entities have been discovered and 30 families of compounds have been identified. The company also has three molecules in advanced preclinical development. Also, more than 4,500 cancer patients have already been treated in clinical trials in more than 100 hospitals in Europe, the United States and Canada. The company works in partnership with Ortho Biotech Products (Johnson & Johnson) for Yondelis and also collaborates with Universities and scientific institutions worldwide. The company has corporate headquarters in Madrid (Spain) and laboratories in Cambridge (United States).
